Notes
This engaging volume profiles Pablo Picasso - the most influencial artist of the twentieth century - in perhaps the least explored, most fascinating and fertile periode of his life. Picasso's youth, from his early teens through the age of twenty-five, was a time of bold exploration, self-discovery, and preoccupation with the eternal issues of passion and mortality. This preoccupation, remarkable in its intensity and nuance, is vividly reflected in the young Picasso's work. From a masterful acadfemic drawing at point when he had barely entered his tens, illustrating the artist's training as a youth, through the development of his radical figure painting as a young man of twenty-five, many of Picasso's most significant early works are reproduced here in ful color. Chronicled are the extraordinary range and complexity of Picasso's formative years, including his influential roles within the vibrant bohemian community in Barcelona and the Paris avant-garde, from the pathos of his "blue period" throught the evocative, enigmatic elegance of his "Rose period", to his personal reponse to Mediterranean classicism in 1906. Intriguing comparisons with other Spanish and French artist-including Picasso's contemporaries, rivals, and occasiomal friend Ramon Casa, Santiago Rusiñol, Edgar Degas, Henri Matisse, André Derain, and others-provide fresh insights into the aesthetic complexity of "fin-de-siècle" Barcelona and Paris.
Foreword -- Beginnings -- A Catalan "Modernìsta" -- A passionate lover of modern life in Belle Époque Paris -- A painter of human misery -- A painter of silent meditations -- The lure of the Mediterranean -- Epilogue.
