The « Picasso 1906. The Turning Point » catalogue accompanies the same-titled exhibition held in the Museo Reina Sofía to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of Pablo Picasso’s death. The publication surveys the artist’s output in 1906, a pivotal year in his trajectory and one which, examined through a contemporary aesthetic awareness, can be regarded as a “period” in its own right within Picasso’s creative evolution. In 1906, Picasso’s first contribution to the definition of modern art developed, and it was also a “turning point” year as he led figurative representation into new terrain, redefined the framework of figure and ground, assimilated cultural reference points hitherto considered “primitive” — the art book, so-called « art nègre », the Catalan Romanesque, protohistoric Mediterranean art, ancient Egypt, among others — to incorporate new approaches to gender and redraw his relationship with art history.
